1You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many
witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Endure hardship with us like a good
soldier of Christ Jesus. 4No one serving as a soldier
gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. 5Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not
receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. 6The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share
of the crops. 7Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord
will give you insight into all this.
- How was the gospel passed on from
Paul to Timothy and to others in their time? (by words of mouth and by witnessing of
the Word) What has and what hasn’t changed today?
- Why was it important for Paul
to stress that his teachings were in front of many witnesses? (it was
taught for all to hear, so they can support and validate Timothy later) Is
it more difficult to teach in front of a crowd than in person? (your life
has to be open and trustworthy to all of them)
- While passing on the Gospel,
Paul urged Timothy to value the virtues described in three metaphors in
verse 3 through 6. Can you name
them? Compare them with common
values today. Why is each of these virtues important to live a Christian
life today?
- In verse 1 and 7, how did
Apostle Paul view his words? Were Paul’s words his own teaching or they
were God’s Word? (the Lord will give you insight into all this)
- Do we learn God’s Word by
studying to understand it, or by the revelation of the Holy Spirit? Or both?
What could happen if we only have one but not the other? (describe
two cases) Encourage group to
establish a habit of 20-30 minutes daily Bible reading and praying at the
same time.
