Exodus 3:9-15

9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." 11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" 12 And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain." 13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " 15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD,  the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

  1. Share an impossible (difficult, scary, painstaking) situation in your life. What was your reaction to that situation?
  2. Read verses 9-11. God has given a grave task to Moses, and Moses’ reaction was: Who am I that I could take this? What was in Moses’ mind when he cried out his protest? (that God has given him an impossible task to accomplish on his own)
  3. Read verse 12. Would a heavy dose of positive thinking help Moses?  What did God actually tell him? (God will be with him, God will be responsible) What could the sign mean to Moses? (It’s God’s deed and God will be worshiped, not Moses)
  4. Read verses 13 and 14. Who named other gods in the world? What does the name “I AM” mean to you? (God is self-existing, everlasting, completely sovereign).
  5. Read verse 15. God offered unconditional covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and their descendants. Now God made the New Covenant in Jesus with whoever believes.  How does God want us to remember him from generation to generation? (we remember his love in his salvation from past generations to future generations)  How would remember God as God of salvation of generations change our lives today?
  6. Revisit question 1. After this study, how might you react to your difficulties differently?
